Generally, when it comes to scaling Ethereum or blockchains, there are 2 major ways available to deal with the scalability issue - scaling the base layer itself (Layer 1) or scaling the network by offloading some of the work to the different layer – Layer 2.

Scaling Solutions

    On-chain scaling - Improves the base layer blockchain

•     Sharding - Sharding is a multi-phase upgrade to enhances Ethereum’s scalability and capacity. It will reduce network congestion & improves the transactions per second by creating new chains, known as “shards chains”, which will spread the network's load across 64 new chains.

    Off-chains Scaling - A layered approach with multiple protocols working together

•     Layer 2 Scaling – It handles transactions off the Ethereum Mainnet (layer 1) while captivating the advantage of the robust decentralized security model of Mainnet Ethereum which upsurge the processing capacity of a blockchain and as a result release congestion on the network.
•    Rollups – Rollups execute transactions outside layer 1 & generates a cryptographic proof called SNARK to which is posted to the layer 1 where consensus is reached. As transaction data is contained in the base layer’s blocks, this allows rollups to be intact by native Ethereum security. There are 2types of rollups – ZK Roll Ups & Optimistic Roll Ups
•    Plasma - A plasma chain is an isolated blockchain that is anchored to the primary Ethereum chain, & uses fraud proofs to arbitrate disputes. It allows the creation of unlimited Child Chains by using Smart Contracts & Merkle trees. Offloading transactions into child chains from the main chains allows fast & cheap transactions.
•    Sidechain - A sidechain is an independent Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible blockchain that runs in parallel to the Ethereum base layer. These are compatible with Ethereum via two-way bridges, and run under their own consensus models, and block parameters.
•    Channels - Channels are one of the first substantially evinced scaling solutions. They employ multisig contracts to allow participants to transact speedily & freely off-chain, then settle finality with Mainnet. This reduces network congestion, fees, & delays. The two types of channels: state channels and payment channels.
